There are many State-wide initiatives and local programs being implemented to improve Aboriginal health outcomes including the following:

NSW Health is committed to working in partnership with Aboriginal people through ACCHSs and the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of NSW (AH&MRC) to improve the social, cultural and emotional wellbeing, as well as health of Aboriginal people. This means that Aboriginal people are providing leadership in identifying and deciding on health priorities through participation in the planning and delivery of health services. This commitment has been formalised in a number of key strategic and policy documents including NSW Aboriginal Health Partnership Agreement and the NSW Aboriginal Health Plan.

Under the Building on Aboriginal Communities Resilience initiative, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) are being funded to deliver programs to local Aboriginal communities across NSW and increase access to culturally responsive suicide prevention activities. The programs are being designed and led by Aboriginal people.

Quit for New Life initiative is being implemented to embed best practice smoking cessation care in routine service delivery for women having an Aboriginal baby. Smoking during pregnancy is a NSW Health priority because of the increased risk of health problems for the developing baby (NSW Health 2017).
